Can you believe it? It’s only two months until our Inaugural Maker Retreat, June 19-22 at the Art Nest Retreat Center in Agency, MO. We are really looking forward to four fun and learning-filled days with makers from across the country.
Learning Opportunities

Each day we’ll be joined, via Zoom, by designers and brand partners. These 30-45 minute live education sessions will give them a chance to share more about the goodies they’ve provided for the swag bags, plus a little demonstration on how to make the most of these gifts. We’ll get to hear from:
- Cheryl Kuczek of Paradiso Designs
- Sam Hunter of Hunters Design Studio
- Laura Piland of Slice of Pi Quilts
- Rena Deardon of Rustic Horseshoe
Teresa will be teaching her Elemental Coat workshop, starting on Friday morning, so there is plenty of time to work through the project together so you can create a quilt coat you’ll love.
Hawke will teach two shorter workshops on Saturday: Color Value for Quilt Design and Procreate for Quilters. These will both be hands-on workshops to increase your understanding and skills. As a fine arts painter and illustrator turned long-arm quilter, Hawke speaks both languages and will clarify the role of art skills in quiltmaking.
Sewing

Not interested in specific workshops or demonstrations? No problem! You’ll have 50+ hours to sew to your heart’s content (though we do recommend you get some sleep in there!)
The sewing space is large, well-lit and available 24 hours a day. If you’re an early bird or night owl, you are welcome to sew when it suits you.
There are several cutting stations with large mats and standard rulers. You will need your own rotary cutter and specialty rulers.
Ironing stations are spread throughout with irons provided by the Art Nest Retreat Center and Magic Quilting and Crafting Spray provided by Faultless.
We are a diverse group of sewists and I expect that we’ll be able to learn much from each other! Feel free to bring projects that have stumped you or need a little advice on. This includes quilts, garments, stuffed animals, bag, purses and handwork.
Food

We’ll provide some finger food and easy sandwich makings on Thursday as people arrive and set up. For dinner, we’ll be sharing our favorite KC BBQ joint with you — ribs, brisket, pulled pork and all the fixin’s.
Each of the consecutive days, we’ll provide a continental style breakfast with pastries, cereal, bars, coffee, tea and fruit. This will be available early and can be used as breakfast, brunch or snack. Each evening, we’ll gather for a family-style dinner.
There will be gluten-free, vegetarian, and dairy-free options for each meal.
In addition to the retreat kitchen, there is a snack kitchen right off the sewing room where you are free to put snacks and beverages for easy retrieval during the day. Please be sure to mark your stuff if you do not want to share.
Transportation

The nearest airport is the MCI/Kansas City airport Is it in Kansas or Missouri? It’s hard to tell and it doesn’t even matter. Either way, Hawke will come pick you up or we’ll arrange a rideshare for you.
We’ll be closing the sign-ups for the retreat in mid-May, so don’t dally. I’ll need to gather all the items for the swag bags and finish up the goodies that I’m making for the attendees. If you have any questions about the retreat, please reach out to me via email.
