SewPINK and Take Care of Yourself

As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes to a close, I wanted to conclude with a wrap up of some of my favorite posts from the ByAnnie SewPINK Blog Hop.

It was kicked off with a post from Shannon Fabrics, a tutorial for the Mastectomy Pillow that I made four years ago. It was the first year I participated in SewPINK and it’s still quite useful. The Mastectomy Pillow is particularly helpful for post-surgery when ports are in use and under the arms is incredibly sensitive. The pillows allow for a bit of extra cushion and when they are made with Cuddle® fabrics, they are extra comfortable. There’s both a pattern and a video (look how young I was!) via the blog post.

Sewfinity posted some beautiful versions of the ByAnnie Drop Zone pattern and shared a wealth of tips and information about how to make them (I’ve made a few and they are super easy!). You can also find her paper-pieced Pink Ribbon from a previous inclusion in SewPINK on her blog.

My friend Laura at Slice of Pi Quilts shared about getting her first mammogram and how important it is to get them regularly starting at 40 years old, as well as a tutorial for a cute fabric chain using Soft and Stable in a fun and different way.

Clover and Violet shared her adorable on-the-go sewing kit, The Rosa Supply Case, which is perfect for so many occasions when it is nice to have all the supplies for a hand-sewing project within easy reach.

There were so many great posts and I highly recommending checking them all out at ByAnnie.com/SewPINK. I appreciate everyone’s willingness to share their stories and experiences, as well as their inspiration and beautiful creations. Please remember to get regular cancer check-ups, whether it’s for your breasts, your skin, your lungs or anywhere else on your body. Cancer can often be stopped, if we catch it early. Take care of yourself.

For my SewPINK project, I made this quilt for ByAnnie.com to use for their lives and while it is simply a smaller version of the Fat Quarter Shop version, it also served as a reminder to me to take care of my heart. Cancer does not run in my family, but heart disease does and I’ve been unlucky enough to have to deal with a few heart issues. We get one shot at this life and I’m trying to make my run at it as long as possible; I hope you will, too.

The paper-pieced block served as a sort of meditation for me, so I wanted to share it with you in case you’d like to make a similar quilt, too.

You can find all the Woven Heart Quilt Kit at FatQuarterShop.com or just the foundation paper to use your own stash of fabrics.

The #SewPink Initiative was created by ByAnnie.com LLC to raise awareness for breast cancer throughout the year. Efforts culminate in an annual blog hop during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote self-care, awareness, early detection and support for those affected by breast cancer.
