It’s clear that adding a zipper is a good idea, but when I first designed the Elemental Coat pattern it wasn’t on my radar. It took only a few versions, before sewists started asking for it. The basic instructions are included in the 2025 version of the pattern, but even if you’ve got an older version, it’s easy to do.
Basically, you’ll complete your jacket and then sew the zipper on, stitching right along the edge of the binding. Check out the video for all the little details on making it work for you, no matter the jacket length.
It’s critical that it be a separating zipper, rather than a purse zipper. I’m adding separating zippers to the Crinkle Dreams shop in case you can’t find them at your local quilt shop.
